I ran out of my favorite shampoo/conditioner combo last week and was in a total panic because I knew I'd have to shell out at least $35-40 bucks to replenish my dried out supply. In this economy, I could think of some other ways to spend that money. So, I traipsed over to the local beauty supply store. There's a chain of Harmon Face Values stores in the NY, NJ & CT area. I'd been in there for travel size beauty stuff, but never really shopped for anything major. I call hair care major.
I've gotten hooked on the Biolage brand of hair care. For dry, colored or chemically treated hair, it's hydrating and softens every strand so my hair is shiny and looks healthy. Well, a bottle of the shampoo runs at least $19 and a jar of their conditioner is usually around $20. That's a healthy chunk of cash.
On this day, while in the Harmon store, I decided to take my time and explore my options. I quickly spotted my usual Biolage brand, but what I hadn't noticed before was the Harmon "knock-off" brand right beside it. Now, I know that Sally Beauty Supply chains also carries their own gereric "wannabee" brands, but for whatever reason, I just didn't trust them. I asked the sales person what the major difference was between the name brand and the Harmon generic. "Nothing", he said. "Nothing", I said? "Nothing", he repeated. I turned each bottle over, read the labels side-by-side and, by golly, the contents were exactly the same! I paid only $5.99 for the shampoo and only $8.99 for the conditioner. That smart, superwoman move saved me $25 smack-a-roos.
I brought the generic home, used it and love it. I'm hooked, ladies and gentleman.
Moral of the story: Save your money and buy generic.
