When Thanksgiving rolls around every single, solitary year (you get the picture), anxiety becomes my soul mate. What's gonna be different this year?...adding a new vegetable no one's ever heard of? ... baking a yummy dessert worth 1260 calories per bite? ...spiking the punch with 120 proof rum, vodka and gin?
Hey...how about sprucing up the table? RealSimple magazine shares 26 Beautiful Table Settings to add a little spice to the festivities. Somehow, a well designed and decorated table makes even the worst food taste great. It creates a mood that's festive and light. After all...we don't want Uncle Charlie telling those awful jokes & making those silly grunting noises again, do we?
Unbelievable. Thanksgiving is next week. I haven't even thought about my dinner menu yet. And right now, I'm leaning toward hot dogs and baked beans with last year's unexpired box of stuffing. Hey, it's food isn't it?
Now that I'm getting older, I seem to get a bit more mushy about the intended meanings behind these "giving" holidays we celebrate - not what they've become in mainstream America. I mean, I'm eternally thankful that I have a roof over my head; a chance to move my limbs freely; (as so many others don't); a car to drive; a blog to write; talents to share. While remembering everything I'm grateful for, I can remember in recent months seeing someone who didn't have. That's what next week's holiday means to me. Who cares about food!
Ok, I really lost it there for a minute. Back to reality....Ok, food. ...I'm probably going to go through the expected, traditional Thanksgiving ritual. I'll stand on my aching legs for 8-10 hours for 2 days straight. Then I'll burn the bottom of the rice pot, like I always do. Next I'll listen to how salty this was, how bland that was and watch how quickly it takes my table mates to scoff down the meal that took 20 hours to prepare. Lastly, I'll be thankful to spend 4 hours back in the kitchen washing and drying casserole dishes while everyone else passes out on the couch with gravy drools all over their clothes. By 8pm, I don't want to see another teapot, hear another word or sample another piece of pie. Tired and full, I'll be grateful for a warm, cozy cot. Sort of like now.
