I was waiting on line to check out at my local supermarket and caught myself checking out the women around me. It wasn't just a glance....it was a full blown, head-to-toe, "she forgot the check the mirror", "nice shoes", "dry hair" , cute butt - kind of mental once-overs. And for the record....I'm a female whose preference is men.
I had to catch myself there for a minute. Ironically, as I looked around at the faces of the other women waiting in line , I noticed they were doing the exact same thing - measuring themselves against the rest of the estrogen nation.
It's no secret that women most often, dress to impress other women (that's been a huge debate over the years). Deep down, I think we feel like we're in some sort of competition with each other. For what...I don't know.
Competition that for the next mans compliment? To mask the emotionally charred body suit we're wearing underneath? To give the appearance of success and independence? To make a few heads turn as we sashay by your glance?
What I do know is this....whether we like it or not we do really don't care what others think about the way we look. We do dress to impress. We do want our egos stroked, by any means necessary.
Here are 5 Clues that you care what other woman think:
I can't tell you how many times I've been late to an event or date simply because I hated my outfit or couldn't style my hair perfectly. Nothing seemed to work...the slacks weren't fitting right...the top was blah...the jewelry looked trashy...the shoes weren't working. My hair just wouldn't fall properly...the curls wouldn't twist like I wanted them to...the ends seemed dry... no amount of hair goop could make my edges smooth and lay flat. You know the drill.
Funny thing is, my hair looked the same yesterday and the clothing...well... I'd matched up that same outfit before. Ok...time for a mental readjustment. Sometimes I just need to slap myself and realize that THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH ME.
The clothes and the hair don't make me. The most expensive Jimmy Choo's don't define how smart I am. The freshly brushed highlights in my hair won't help me win a deal. The pencil skirt I nabbed at Bloomingdale's wasn't going to give me the inner joy I needed to happy or to be a blessing to someone else that day.
Who cares that I have a curling iron burn on the side of my head or that my teeth aren't straight or that I have a few corns on my toes. Yes, I have flaws and I am the proud treasurer of the national Imperfection Club where there are millions of members. Today, though I'll release a genuine smile, look in the mirror and love what I see and embrace everything about me. Gee...I feel better already!
The kick-start to my Monday work week, is watching Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday nights. I love the competition, the tasks and the talk. Well, last night 70 year old legendary singer, Dionne Warwick got the boot by Donald. Frankly I'm surprised that it didn't happen sooner. Being on this show was a huge eye opener for her and running a business the Trump way was like living in a foreign country to the R&Ber. Vocal and defensive, Dionne didn't know how to stand up for herself and in the end, asked to be fired. The Don doesn't like spineless quitters and relieved Dionne without batting an eyelash. Oh well.
Who's up next on the chopping block? My guess is....Hope. Where's she been and what's she done for the team anyway??? Tune in!
