I was waiting on line to check out at my local supermarket and caught myself checking out the women around me. It wasn't just a glance....it was a full blown, head-to-toe, "she forgot the check the mirror", "nice shoes", "dry hair" , cute butt - kind of mental once-overs. And for the record....I'm a female whose preference is men.
I had to catch myself there for a minute. Ironically, as I looked around at the faces of the other women waiting in line , I noticed they were doing the exact same thing - measuring themselves against the rest of the estrogen nation.
It's no secret that women most often, dress to impress other women (that's been a huge debate over the years). Deep down, I think we feel like we're in some sort of competition with each other. For what...I don't know.
Competition that for the next mans compliment? To mask the emotionally charred body suit we're wearing underneath? To give the appearance of success and independence? To make a few heads turn as we sashay by your glance?
What I do know is this....whether we like it or not we do really don't care what others think about the way we look. We do dress to impress. We do want our egos stroked, by any means necessary.
Here are 5 Clues that you care what other woman think:
I've probably said this before, but "Who makes the rules about what you can and cannot wear?" We've been following the rules of a few select know-it-all's about what high fashion is, what goes with what and whether you should wear white after Labor Day. Seems that more people have become more free spirited and have changed the channel on stuffy fashion rule makers.
So, it dawned on me this morning that Labor Day and the unofficial end to summer is only 17 days away. Holy smokes! Where'd the summer go, right? If I'm going to be at least moderately compliant with this silly "no white after Labor Day" dictatorship, I might as well pull out every piece of white apparel and accessory I have and rock it every day for the next 17 days. After all, there's loads of things in my closet that I haven't had an occasion to take off the hanger or out of the box yet.
This seemed to be the summer where I found some really great, comfortable finds....metallic flat sandals that really did match everything I wore, And....the dresses I swooshed around in all summer - full of color and pizzaz. Never got a chance to don the whites. Betcha I will now. With only 17 days left, I plan to look like the female version of John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever-dressed in all white for the next couple of weeks. Excuse me while I strike pose.
I'm not necessarily a slave to the latest seasonal trends... I don't need to shop until I drop....I can't justify spending my entire Spring tax return check on shoes that I know I can't even walk in. Truth be told, I've got some shoe boxes in my closet from last season- unopened, unworn and still waiting for a grand entrance.
But let's face it girls, we all need a little "feel good" token to usher in the 2013 fun & frollic season. So, here are the best pics from Style.com we found. Happy dancing!
I always enjoy attending Fashion Week event in NYC. It gives me a chance to see what fashion designers have been up to...which trends they'll be setting (or trying to)...how they use fabrics & colors and what I should try to imitate. Let's face it...most of what's being catwalked is waayyyy out of my price range, but a girl can dream, right?
At this year's Couture Fashion show at the ritzy Waldorf Astoria in NYC, the designs went from dignified to dowdy...cultured to costume-like and wearable to way-over-the-top.
Here are my top picks. They exude bright and bold creativity. Enjoy.

No matter how old you are, summer represents 3 glorious months of playtime, playthings and play clothes. From sheer and seductive flowing mini-dresses to the all-white, head-to-toe ensembles that always make you look like you've just stepped off a 100 ft. yacht....bronzed and millionaire-ish. Sadly, we've got to say "goodbye" to a few of the tell tale signs of summer... like wearing anything white. Why? Because some hoity toity fashionista a zillion years ago said that it wasn't chic to wear white after Labor Day. This all seems like etiquette snobbery to me.
If you can wear big, clunky hot knee-high boots with shorts in the summer, why can't we wear white after Labor Day? This has always confused me.
My research on this subject revealed that this ridiculous rule has no real foundation. There's speculation all about the cabin and none worth mentioning to you.
I say....wear whatever you want....and break the darn rule, but within reason. There are a few clothing items and accessories that we'd do best to tuck away until next June.....like the white handbag and white shoes. But for now, I'm wearin' my white jeans and holdin' my head up high...at least for today. Happy Labor Day!
Nope....we didn't leave you out. These are the top picks for swimsuits if you're pretty much in shape, but don't want anything spilling out, if you know what I mean. It's all about color this year...from bright neons to cool, breezy pastels. Whatever tickles your fancy, be sure to update your swimwear with a suit that actually fits your body.
Happy sanding, surfing and swimming!
With the first day of summer making its beaming appearance in the next couple of weeks, it is the perfect time to start investing in a pair of height defining sandals. Wedges are the ideal choice for all style types, with an array of neutral tones on the market; you are bound to find a pair that will compliment your look. This summer 2012, go for mixed animal prints, cognac finishes or metallic hints, each accent adds just the right touch of chic.

Just read the latest US Weekly Magazine at my new nail salon. (I can't watch them do my nails). So...... I see that the latest rage are printed pants for women. Guess I've been living under a rock.
I just tossed 2 pair of printed slacks that I've had since they were in style the last time (I refuse to incriminate myself with dates). One pair still had tags on them and every year, during closet cleaning season, I was going to wear them. Never found (or made) the right occasion to prowl in my printed pants, so I supposed I just graced someone else's life.
So now they're back and I'm lovin' the printed personalities... the colors...the designs...the staple accessory apparel. With such busy patterns, you don't need much else to make your look funky, demure or slammin'. The diverse cuts of the slacks means that every body type can rock them. Check out which ones you'll look smashing in... Pinterest.
Don't you just love all these neat freak guru's who give advice about how to organize your living space? Look, I know that a cluttered closet or bedroom makes for a messier lifestyle, but who's got time to rifle through an entire wardrobe in a day. Let's face it, you make the initial effort, figure you'll finish it up the following weekend and then...well you know what happens. I've been trying to figure out how to make my closet look like the one's in those magazines for years without having to spend an arm & a leg to do it right.
You've got to start somewhere! I began by really going through every piece of clothing in my closet and set a rule for keeping items or tossing them: If I didn't wear them last year or they didn't magically expand to fit my added inches, then they're gone. That's it.
Next, I organized them by type (skirts, blouses, slacks, dresses, jackets, dressy dresses). Then within each type of clothing, I organized them by color. Wow! Now I can mix and match my outfits according to my mood and destination. This was just the start. Next weekend, I'll clue you in on what I've done with my handbags, shoes and accessories. Whatever you do, start the process. You'll feel better too.
