Exercising for me is all about keeping the pounds off, toning up and trying to stay somewhat fit. I work out at a gym who's morning time fitness enthusiasts consist of 70 year old housewives lifting the same 2 pound weights they started with 5 years ago. Not much competition from an all-female facility. Seeing them has prompted me to step up my routine and pushed harder than ever before. Sure, I want to see results. Doesn't everyone? But do I want to look like....well....a man?
I went to the International Body Building and Fitness Federation (IBFF) female & male competition in NYC's trendy Tribeca district recently. My mouth hung open the entire time. It as an afternoon filled with testosterone..from men & women. Never have I seen a culture of people so buff, so fit, so largely muscular.
The female competitors, clad in bikinis and slathered in greasy tanning lotion, all appeared before the cameras and judges with muscles I didn't even know existed. They posed on command and were judged on the muscle definition of arms, chest, back, thighs and butt. I thought it quite interesting, to say the least, that men were not asked to "turn around and walk". At the end of each judging segment, which took all of maybe 15 minutes per group, the competitors were visibly exhausted. It obviously takes a lot of energy to strike a pose that protrudes muscles in such a way that they're bigger, more defined and bulkier than the guy (or gal) to your right or left.
This whole experience has put new light on my own workout. Yes, yes, I want lean muscle mass. Yes, yes, I want to look better in my clothes. No, no, I don't want to flex and flirt.
