Even though we hate how our hair looks all puffed out, experts say that humidity in hair is actually a good thing. It means that you’re getting extra moisture on overstressed tresses.
If you want to tame that mane, here are a couple of quick products, styles & tips you can use to keep it all together:
A LITTLE DAB’LL DO YA!
Trial Sizes – Don’t spend a lot…especially if you aren’t sure the product is right for you hair type. Visit your local drug/beauty supply store and stock up on a variety of trial size products. The best in a pinch: a small tube of lotion – it smooths wiry, stray hairs around your hairline and ends.
Spritz & Run - Use a modest amount of anti-frizz hair spray before leaving for the day. To prevent hard, straw-like hair later, use a pea-size amount of hair gloss on hair first and then spray.
Hair Gels- A very small portion goes along way for hard to tame hair. Read the ingredients first! Don’t use products that have a primary base of alcohol. It dries out hair and then you’ve got more trouble on your hands.
“Sun-In”- I’ve personally been using this product for years. I professional lighten my hair during winter months to give a bit of glow to my lack-luster skin. In the summer, Sun In works just fine. It’s alcohol-free and lightens hair gradually. The more time you spend in the sun, the lighter your hair becomes. It’s got a great coconut smell.
Headbands- From elastic hair bands to the standard plastic bands…there’s so many ways to magically manage your mane during the summer. It’s a winner for a short doo too!
Braids – They’re all the rage…fat plaits, fishtail braids, French braids…. It’s so easy to do and so chic to wear – daytime or for a night on the town. Check out how to do it….read more
Scrunchies- The perfect ponytail sometimes need a little extra somthin’ somethin’ to bump it up a notch. Try Neero & Ana’s natural satin scrunchies in a rainbow of earth toned, classic and summer pastel shades.
Bobby Pins- Use bobby pins to create a textured style on crown of hair and on the sides. A little creativity goes a long ways. (Oh, and make sure the pins are hidden in hair!)

Ever try to read the ingredients on the back of skin creams, shampoos or basic medicine cabinet occupants? Fugget-about-it! It's almost impossible to know which ingredients heal and which may harm. I have to admit, I've never really given much thought to the healing benefits of coconut. It's great on a cake, but I don't think eating a huge, iced coconut cake is going to make me healthier. To my surprise, there are a host of beauty benefits that coconut and coconut oils give. Here are our Top 6:
When I heard on the radio yesterday that Skechers had been sued for $50 million dollars for misrepresenting their sneaker brand by claiming weight loss and a super toned body, I breathed a sigh of ...... "I told you so's".
Somehow I knew all along that their sneaker advertising claims were just too good to be true. Admittedly, I never bought a pair, but asked everybody who did, if they got the results the company said they would.
You can always tell when a person doesn't want to admit that they got suckered into buying something that didn't work....they never give you a firm "yes" or even look you in the eye while they respond. Like the time I tried the Japanese detoxing pads. You can find these silly pad packs at the counters of the local drug stores. Well, I felt like an absolute fool when my research revealed (after my purchase, of course) that the pads don't remove toxins from your body at all. The iron in the pad reacts to the perspiration on your feet and "rusts" the pad - making you think that it's removing harmful cooties and mysterious voodoo stuff from your body. Give me a freakin' break!
Whew! Soooooo....... looks like we're back to good ole' fashion exercise, weight training and toning at the gym or in the hood. No more "fast & easy" remedies for getting my big butt in shape with these miracle marketing ploys. Not buying Sketchers, weight-loss pills that melt 10 lbs. of fat in 2 days or that abs cruncher that doubles as a park bench. Well, you know what I mean....
There's nothing worse than getting ready for a hot date or primping for an exciting event and everything's looking good, except your hair. When your ends are busted, your hair looks dry & dull or just doesn't cooperate, you're in trouble. It doesn't matter how much those Jimmy Choos cost at the other end of your body. Regardless of how fly (can I still use that term?) your outfit is, if your hair is out of whack, you'll never turn anyone's head.
Here are the top culprits that cause hair breakage and contribute to stressed out strands:
Recession? What recession! I just read that Americans will spend upwards of $16.3 billion dollars this year on Mother's Day gifts. That includes restaurants, gift certificates, flowers and everything in between. Spas, nail salons and hair salons do their fair share of business too. I sort of like the beauty aspect of gift-giving. And what do you give a 90-year old who's got everything, wants for nothing and doesn't need another trinket for her dresser (I'm just saying..).
Everybody loves to be pampered, right? We could all probably do our own nails and hair (ok, maybe not the way professionals do), but you get my point. There's something to be said for being doted upon. So, my vote is for something of beauty for Mom this Mother's Day.
My suggestion (and shameless plug) will be to get Mom and your special sister-friends/mommies a gift certificate for a local mani/pedi, a nature-inspired Cream of Ivory satin pillowcase and an indulgent piece of Godiva chocolate. Stick them in a glossy shopping bag and beam proudly. It'll probably be the best gift she'll ever get.
