I just had to write about this.... Over time, I've acquired a taste for foods I couldn't stand as a child or young adult in my 20's. Now, I kinda like them. "Like what?" you ask?
Well for starters I now crave that bitter taste of broccoli rabe...the pungent flavor of Greek Yogurt and the mushy consistency of oatmeal. The morning breakfast oats really fill me up for at least 5 hours before I'm getting hungry again. Trust me, when you're going through or have crossed over the menopause threshold, that's a real good thing....not over eating.
I recently found out that oatmeal has many other benefits and can keep its nutritional value far longer than any other food. Researchers tested and ate a box of oatmeal that was 28 years old. I can't even remember what I was doing 28 years ago. Whoops. Yes I can. Anyway....the ancient box still kept much of its healthy benefits and didn't disintegrate over time. Looks like I'll be restocking my emergency supply cabinet, taking out the gourmet quail eggs and replacing them with good ole' Quaker Oats!
Here are a few other benefits of oatmeal found on The Daily Green -a Good Housekeeping online magazine:
